چکیده

In the present study, the reproduction potential and survival capability of the soil nematode Pristionchus maupasi was followed in 10 cm Petri dishes at different constant temperatures: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 C. The experiment started by placing nematode eggs on each dish. The minimum number of days from eggs, at start, to adult egg producing nematodes, decreased from 7 days at 10C to 3 days at 25C. At 5C no eggs hatched, and at 30C the released larvae did not develop into egg producing adults. After 7 days all eggs had hatched in the interval between 15 and 30 C and 87 % at 10 C. From hatched eggs the 1 generation nematodes evolved. At day 4, the number of 1 generation nematodes was almost similar at temperatures ranging from 10 to 25 C, while the number at 30 C was significantly lower. The 1 generation adult nematodes gave rise to a 2 generation, which did not develop to fertility, but became arrested 3 stage “dauerlarvae”, maybe due to reduced food supplies and increased concentration of wastes. From 100 ‘eggs at start’, 10000 to 14000 2 generations “dauerlarvae” developed at temperatures between 10 and 20C. In the interval from 10 to 25 C, a substantial number of these survived more than 2 months.

Species-specific recognition of beetle cues by the nematode Pristionchus maupasi.

The environment has a strong effect on development as is best seen in the various examples of phenotypic plasticity. Besides abiotic factors, the interactions between organisms are part of the adaptive forces shaping the evolution of species. To study how ecology influences development, model organisms have to be investigated in their environmental context. We have recently shown that the nemat...

Effect of Initial Density of Meloidogyne javanica on Salvia officinalis

The influence of different initial inoculum densities of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica on the growth of sage (Salvia officinalis), root-knot development and nematode multiplication was investigated 90 days after inoculation under greenhouse conditions. With the increase in the nematode initial inoculum densities, shoot fresh/dry weight, shoot/root length and root fresh/dry weight ...

Comparative Response of Alfalfa to Pratylenchus penetrans Populations.

Four populations of Pratylenchus penetrans did not differ (P > 0.05) in their virulence or reproductive capability on Lahontan alfalfa. There was a negative relationship (r = -0 .7 9 ) between plant survival and nematode inocula densities at 26 +/- 3 C in the greenhouse. All plants survived at an inoculum level (Pi) of 1 nematode/cm(3) soil, whereas survival rates were 50 to 55% at 20 nematodes...

Nematodes of the genus Pristionchus are closely associated with scarab beetles and the Colorado potato beetle in Western Europe.

Evolutionary developmental biology examines how changes in developmental programmes give rise to developmental and, ultimately, morphological novelty. To this end, comparisons of related but distinct organisms have to be performed. The diplogastrid nematode Pristionchus pacificus has been developed as a satellite system for a detailed comparison of various developmental processes to the model o...

Microevolutionary analysis of the nematode genus Pristionchus suggests a recent evolution of redundant developmental mechanisms during vulva formation.

To identify the mechanisms by which molecular variation is introduced into developmental systems, microevolutionary approaches to evolutionary developmental biology have to be taken. Here, we describe the molecular and developmental characterization of laboratory strains of the nematode genus Pristionchus, which lays a foundation for a microevolutionary analysis of vulva development. We describ...
